In 1925 Washington Herald bought 460 acres along the Severn River in the Crownsville area just outside Annapolis for $120,000. The marketing people hired to advertise the location for sale listed it as a summer resort and divided the land into 25 x 100 square foot sized lots. Potential buyers could purchase a waterfront lot for only $200 and any rest for $25.00! Some homebuyers built small cottages, while many others just pitched a tent on their lots. By 1930 the community was thriving for its stunning beach community flocking in people from all over.
Herald Harbor has lost much of its water access, with just a tiny beach still available within walking distance of most homes. As the years progressed, numerous manufacturers ran to the local area, building moderate homes for purchasers. In the 1970's it was the measured upheaval, and the 1990s brought the stick made split foyers and Colonials.
Today Herald Harbor is a beautiful eclectic community of summer cottages and homes next to waterfront mansion estates. Home prices are some of the most affordable in the Annapolis and Crownsville area. Houses for sale in the Herald Harbor neighborhood begin in the $350,000 to the high millions depending on several factors.
